Bailey Fisher Executive Search is pleased to announce that William Sporborg has been appointed as Adviser to the Private Markets Practice, with a focus on the Eastern region.
A qualified accountant who has spent all of his working life working in private companies, both as a private equity practitioner, a venture capitalist and as an entrepreneur, William has developed close relationships with senior business people across the Eastern region, having lived and worked in the region all his life, initially in Bishop’s Stortford, before moving to Newmarket. After working in London for Price Waterhouse, Brent Walker PLC and Duke Street, William joined NW Brown & Co in Cambridge in 1997, working in corporate finance before co-founding the Cambridge Gateway Fund, an early stage venture capital business. For the last ten years, William has designed, raised and managed niche alternative tax efficient investments, in bloodstock, racing, jewellery and fine wine. Outside of his business interests, William is a familiar face in the region. He was educated at Magdalene College, at Cambridge University and spent many years as a leading amateur rider. William is a Director of Newmarket Racecourse, having formerly been a Director at Huntingdon Racecourse, and he is a member of the Jockey Club.
As Adviser to the Private Markets Practice at Bailey Fisher, William’s role will be to support the growth of private companies across the Eastern region. Private Markets is one of three specialist sectors for Bailey Fisher, alongside Technology, and Life Sciences & Digital Health. Founded in 1998, by Paul Bailey and Ann Fisher, Bailey Fisher has contributed to the success of some of the UK’s most impressive companies over the years, by identifying and introducing individuals who have a profound impact on subsequent company growth. Initially based in Newmarket, Bailey Fisher is headquartered in Cambridge with offices in London.
William says “I have known Paul and Ann for over 20 years. I worked closely with them when they were founding Bailey Fisher, and used their services regularly when I was a Partner at the Cambridge Gateway Fund. I have seen the business develop, initially in technology leaders, finance directors and non-executive director roles, and more recently in life sciences and digital health. I am excited by the growth of the Private Markets Practice, which is a natural extension of Bailey Fisher’s success in its primary markets.”
“Cambridge rightly attracts considerable international media coverage for its scientific and business excellence, and this can deflect away from the extraordinary opportunities within more established businesses in the Eastern region. The blurring of lines between more traditional companies and so called technology companies will create greater need for additional people resources at a senior level, and I believe that the strength of the brand, the broad range of experiences and the trust and ability to deliver will enable Bailey Fisher to become an increasing presence in the search market.”
“I am keen to use my personal and business contacts and evangelise the merits of using Bailey Fisher to identify and access senior executives who can add significant value to some of the Eastern region’s increasingly dynamic private companies.”
Bailey Fisher’s client list within Private Markets includes a number of well-established and traditional businesses that are currently experiencing, or planning for, dynamic growth. Aspall, the Suffolk based cyder making company founded in 1728, has undergone rapid growth over the past decade to become a leading brand. Bailey Fisher has worked closely with Aspall to support the company’s growth, including introducing Aaron Kelly as Group Finance Director. Weatherbys, the family run business at the heart of the horse racing industry for almost 250 years, has also seen significant growth in the last decade. William says: “Weatherbys is a business that I know extremely well. It is a strong endorsement of Bailey Fisher’s capability that they placed Graham Ayres as Managing Director of this prestigious company.” Since Graham’s appointment in 2012, Bailey Fisher has supported the growth of the company with a number of key executive appointments, both in the UK and Ireland.
Bailey Fisher’s Private Markets Practice is headed up by Andrew Moore, a Partner at the firm since 2011. Andrew says “I am delighted to welcome William on to the Private Markets team. His vast business experience and wide network will complement that of Bailey Fisher. Alongside our long-standing Technology Practice, the last few years have seen us expand to support the growth of a variety of family and privately owned businesses, helping to identify high calibre executives to drive their growth strategy.”
